display in Fisheries Learning Center Auburn

The newly completed Fisheries Learning Center at Auburn’s E.W. Shell Fisheries Center will officially open as part of the fisheries Expo and Field Day.

Auburn University’s School of Fisheries, Aquaculture and Aquatic Sciences will host a Fisheries Expo and Field Day Saturday, April 6, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., at the E.W. Shell Fisheries Center, located at 2101 N. College St. in Auburn.

In addition to activities for people of all ages, the free, open-to-the-public event will mark the official opening of the Fisheries Learning Center inside the Aquatic Resources Management facility at E.W. Shell. The center features interactive displays, videos, freshwater and marine aquariums and electronic games.

Dave Cline, Alabama Extension aquaculture specialist, said the expo is a chance for the public to learn about the daily goings-on at the Shell Center complex and about the important role Auburn fisheries plays in feeding the hungry, energizing the economy and protecting water resources.

“The goal of the event is to bring more awareness to our research and our precious aquatic resources,” Cline said. “Our fisheries program is one of the best in the world and has a global impact, and we want to share what we do with the Auburn community and the Auburn family.”

Among the day’s highlights will be facility tours; labs; children’s games and fishing; extended fish market hours; informative presentations; food vendors; and demonstrations in the areas of aquaponics, electrofishing, algae harvesting, fish-filleting and cooking.
