Graduate Student Positions

Graduate students in the Auburn marine fish lab work on an Auburn University research station and live on the Alabama Gulf coast.  Most of the student’s research projects are focused on the life history, ecology, behavior, and population assessment of reef fishes.  These projects involve SCUBA diving and offshore boat trips (20 to 50 miles) year-round weather permitting (busy sampling season is from May to October). Students are expected to be team players and regularly help out on other ongoing lab research projects.

All graduate students travel up to AU’s main campus to take one full semester of coursework (typically the spring semester) during their first year to help them to complete their academic requirements.  Any additional coursework is completed at the research station or at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab.  During their stay on the coast graduate  students are funded with research assistantships and typically graduate within 3 years (M.S.) and 5 years (Ph.D.).

Graduate students accepted into this program in the past have originated from many places and have had a combination of strong academic records, work-related experience (as a student or professional), and competitive GRE scores.  The number and timing of position openings are based on available funding. Graduate student position inquiries are always welcome.  If you are interested, please e-mail Steve Szedlmayer (szedlst@auburn.edu) with an brief explanation about yourself, your interests, and a curriculum vitae.
