About the Center

The Auburn University E.W. Shell Fisheries Center facility includes a large, modern building housing research laboratories, aquatic mesocosms, and an administration-education building that includes a public fish market open to the community. 

In addition to constructed ponds used for experimental work, the Center provides a habitat for wildlife, including Bald Eagles, wading birds, reptiles and amphibians.

The E.W. Shell Fisheries Center is a member of the Organization of Biological Field Stations.

Multipurpose Room

The center offers a multipurpose room for use by university faculty & staff for seminars, workshops, training sessions and meetings.

Education Programs & Tours

The E.W. Shell Fisheries Center provides field and laboratory venues for courses taught in Auburn’s School of Fisheries, Aquaculture and Aquatic Sciences; School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences; School of Industrial and Graphic Design; Department of Biosystems Engineering; and Department of Biological Sciences.

The E.W. Shell Fisheries Center is utilized by numerous university courses, as well as the National Science Foundation-funded Research Experiences for Undergraduates program.

The center also hosts school groups through programs such as Fish and Aquaculture Camp, short courses on aquaponics and other subjects as requested. These programs help educate students on where our food comes from, how aquatic organisms lives and the natural resources upon which they depend.

Research

Center supports professors and students conducting research activities in the areas of fisheries, aquaculture and aquatic sciences. This work can take place in ponds and in the laboratories at the station, but also extends to waters throughout Alabama and the Southeastern U.S. Work includes diverse species such as catfish, tilapia, largemouth bass, crayfish and mussels. The center is also the site for a number of graduate thesis and dissertation research projects.

Extension & Outreach

The E.W. Shell Fisheries Center offers demonstration projects programs for industry partners, legislators,the general public and conducts extension-outreach programs for diverse audiences.

In addition, scientists can also be involved in testing new products or technologies for manufacturers and local businesses. The center also supplies fish to different constituencies, including schools, small farms and businesses, fishing rodeos, local restaurants, the AU Raptor Rehabilitation Center, Each Alabama Food Bank and the general public. Students of the School of Fisheries, Aquaculture and Aquatic Sciences operate a fish market at the center every Saturday.
